In 2011 the GMSHI opened a Museum at 219 East Main Street in downtown Gibsonville.
The Gibsonville ABC store and our co-tenant purchased this building in 2018. The Museum was closed in 2022 after enforcement of leasing requirements in state liquor laws. Apparently, the ABC store cannot lease to any party, which included the donation of space to non-profit organizations.
In lieu of having a physical venue during this time, the GMHSI 1) continued to be a resource for historic and genealogical inquiries. We have collected information and historic artifacts since 2009. There is a tremendous amount of historical documentation available upon request. 2) focused on improving this website, production of videos, and other modern methods of information sharing. Please note the ever expanding content at Press & Publications and Detailed Histories. 3) persisted in its educational role by going to the community. This started with the traveling Mrs Gibson exhibit and continues to date.
In 2024, the Gibsonville Lions Club offered the GMHSI a deal we could not pass up at 200 West Steele Street. In August 2024, the GMHSI became proud owners of a two building, 1.14 acre property south of downtown. As of February 2025, this building is under renovation and will be open to the public in 2025.
This Museum will host regional related historical artifacts as well as revolving exhibits. As is our purpose, we will diligently promote public knowledge of local, state, and national history (with an emphasis on the history of Gibsonville).
